Founded in 1991, Heritage York is undergoing a transformational change and is recruiting volunteer board members for 2021/22 term and beyond. Members of the public are welcome to submit their expression of interest to join the Board.
Heritage York was created in 1991 to preserve the built and natural heritage of the former City of York. That vision has evolved into a focus on restoration, preservation and maintenance of Lambton House, a circa 1860 stagecoach inn. Lambton House is located along the historic main east/west road from Toronto to Dundas and is a part of the Lower Humber River catchment area.
Our vision is to inspire a better understanding of the Lower Humber River valley, weaving the diverse past and present of its cultural, natural, and physical heritage, by creating an interpretative centre at historic Lambton House.
Our mission is to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of the diversity of all the peoples who have traversed and inhabited the Lower Humber River and understanding of its environment through research, education, dissemination, and collaboration.

Heritage York is seeking members of the public to join the board who collectively demonstrate a range of experience in one or more of the following areas:
· Diversity: Participation on the board particularly individuals from equity-seeking groups.
· Commitment to Local Heritage: Board members who have ability to devote time required to heritage, public access, managing and maintaining a heritage building and site, and the rigours of being a Director of a working Board.
· Non-Profit Board Governance: An understanding of the Director’s role, board governance and the non-profit world.
· Legal, Financial & Accounting: Experience in business or not-for-profit governance, accounting, finance and financial planning, and grant/funding applications.
· Fundraising Experience & Membership Development: Experience in developing and implementing creative and engaging fundraising initiatives including events, programs, ongoing charitable giving and membership expansion.
· Community Involvement: Experience volunteering or working in the community, as well as community groups and organizations including other heritage societies.
· Digital/Social Media/Marketing/Website development: A strong working knowledge and understanding of various social media and website tools to support both our outreach activities as well as internal management of our resources. This includes general knowledge of Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.,) and other relevant technology.
· Public Programming and Exhibition Planning: Experience in developing, from concept to creation, public programs, and exhibitions.
· Heritage/Culture/Environment: A broad interest in, and knowledge of, cultural, environmental, or built heritage, preservation, and a good understanding of current heritage issues including general knowledge of local, Toronto and Ontario history.
· Provides advice from a community perspective to civic organizations, and members of the public regarding local heritage issues and building management and maintenance.
· Promotes and educates the public regarding local heritage, cultural and environmental issues.
· Establishes and manages publicity and public programs, promoting public awareness of Lambton House and the Lower Humber River valley.
· Manage Lambton House, exhibitions and displays, archives and library collection.
· Serves as a liaison within the heritage community and promotes public awareness of our resources.
· Serves as a focal point for volunteer sector groups like schools, community groups.
· Volunteers at public programmes including pub nights, heritage talks, walks, volunteer appreciation, fundraising events, AGM, etc.
· Carries out such other duties relating to the running a historic building including general cleaning and light maintenance of the property.
The board consists of no less than 7 and no more than 13 members of the public.
Members are requested to commit to at least one full year on the board.
· A minimum 18 years of age
· Resident of the City of Toronto
· Smart Serve and Food Handlers certifications are considered an asset
· A Police Records Check as required
The board meets at least 11 times a year, and at any time at the request of a majority of the members of the board, or at the call of the President/Chair.
