                Archive Technician Internship Description: The Archive Technician Intern will update and prepare inventories, , library, and artifact collection. Apply standards and policies for storage of records and archival materials, and artifacts, catalogue and classify materials, update databases, research and retrieve materials, participate in instructing and assisting users, ensure that the proper procedures are followed in the use of electronic document management systems. Priority is to be given to the documentation and storage of artifacts, both physical and electronic. Collaborates as needed with the Curatorial Assistant (Indigenous), and the Curatorial Assistant. Respond to telephone and in-person inquiries. Other light housekeeping duties as required.

                Requirements: Excellent attention to detail. Excellent computer skills. High proficiency using Microsoft Office suite (Access, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Working knowledge of Mac equipment and software. Knowledge of current archival programs. Ability to research, collate, compile, synthesize, summarize, and present information. An interest in, and knowledge of, Canadian history. Ability to work independently or in a small team setting. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Previous experience working with archive, library, or museum or like collections considered an asset.  Attendance and punctuality essential.

                 

                Paid subject to the availability of a Canada Summer Jobs Grant at $17.00 for up to 8 weeks with a potential 10 weeks for a course credit @ 35 hours/wk.

                Heritage York Curatorial Assistant (Indigenous)

                Curatorial Assistant (Indigenous)

                Description: The Curatorial Assistant (Indigenous) will research the cultures, languages, and geographies of Indigenous peoples through the exploration of oral histories, from creation stories until present times, and the historical interplay of contemporary knowledge of the cultures, languages, and lands of the Indigenous peoples of the Greater Toronto and Humber River area. This will be a continuation of the work performed by the 2022 individual (available for review) with a timeframe post-contact to Confederation. The objective is to research, rethink, and re-frame the dominant colonial lens of the interpretation of the lower Humber River and environs. This project will be guided/directed by indigenous mentor(s) to ensure that it is created through the indigenous lens This educational project is to be accessible to the public. Collaborate as needed with the on-site Archive Technician Intern and Curatorial Assistant. Answer telephone and in-person inquiries. Other light housekeeping duties as required.

                 

                The Curatorial Assistant (Indigenous) must have knowledge of the historical and contemporary experiences and geography of Indigenous peoples in Ontario, with an emphasis on the GTA and peoples. The research requires an understanding of Indigenous resilience, including the historical processes of diplomacy, alliances, and treaty-making, trade and relationships with settlers, and principles and ethics of Indigenous Knowledge.

                 

                The project requires an understanding of how to process information, and the vocabulary to communicate to a variety of audiences. The Curatorial Assistant (Indigenous) will need to work with one or more digital programs for print, electronic media and/or presentations. To achieve this, they may need to acquire new tools and applications.

                Heritage York Curatorial Assistant

                Description:  The Curatorial Assistant will research, conceptualize, and increase the scope and disciplinary range of Greater Toronto Area research sources, with particular attention on the Humber River, from its source to the mouth at Humber Bay. The research scope will include the last glacial period up to urbanization.  This includes pre-contact and contact, colonization, and modern settlement, as well as ecological aspects including the flora and fauna in the surrounding area. In addition, research will include Indigenous peoples and culture before contact, knowledge and beliefs, as well as migrations and movement.

                 

                The project purpose is to establish a digital resource collection / finding aid to assist investigators and researchers in locating additional information and demonstrate that the research is based on and drawn from reliable primary and secondary sources.  The resource collection will credit original sources, authors etc., and include, but not be limited to author(s)/creator(s) name; title of manuscripts, personal papers, photos, letters, newspapers, publications, articles, maps, and other available sources of information including microfiches and URLs (date/time stamped by access day, month, and year); archives; reference libraries, museums, heritage centres, land titles, will and estate records; professionally recorded oral history, etc. Upon completion, this educational project will be accessible to the public. The incumbent will collaborate as needed with the on-site Archive Technician Intern and Curatorial Assistant (Indigenous). 

                The Curatorial Assistant must have knowledge of Ontario and Toronto prehistory and history and, standard bibliographic and research practices. The research requires an understanding of how to process information, and the ability to create enumerative references based on a unifying principle such as creator, subject, date, topic, or other characteristics. The Curatorial Assistant will need to work with one or more digital programs for print, electronic media and/or presentations.

                Building on the work begun by the previous year’s student, this role will continue the research to the present day. Additional duties include answer telephone and in-person inquiries. Other light housekeeping duties as required.
